Oh, I'm glad you brought this up! I had meant to mention that the industrial & financial economy has rendered children net economic burdens rather than net contributors. I had also known about the "sharing the load" in multi-generational households, but I hadn't thought about the social aspect - that's huge, and extremely helpful to add to my mental picture of non-industrial domestic and economic life.
