I think it's at least possible that even when women-competing-with-men-in-the-workplace is a thing of the past because gendered work has reasserted itself... we might still be able to hang on to nice things like independent land-ownership, controlling one's own finances, and being able to get an education. America in particular has a solid history of single women making contributions to the culture and community as writers, teachers, and business-owners. That stuff existed before the industrial revolution, and I see no reason it would necessarily go away after. Those women were the exception, not the rule, but they existed. It was not impossible to carve out an independent life.
