1. I think it's due to a complex assortment of different factors. Though one simple material thing we can observe is that by the time of the axial age, phonetic alphabets became widespread. Thus the much greater ease of immortalizing complex ideas and substantial literary works.
2. Nope, by "win" I'm not imposing any value judgement, but rather just making on observation on which ideas and interpretations ended up becoming the enduring traditions and approaches. On that second part, sure, one could argue that the common patterns across traditions might be pointing at something "right" in the universal sense. This is essentially the basis of Perennialism.
