It seems a marked tragedy in which the directions both Christianity and Buddhism took after their founders passed on. Whatever the beliefs and actions of the originator of a tradition, the future path of a religion seems just as much based on the 2nd generation of leaders. Their characters range from saintly to self interested to downright bedeviled with their own demons with all the dogmas out of that mix and a touch of pragmatism thrown in. It makes me wonder if that was even the case for Mohammed as well.
